I find it so annoying when people assume we're going through a rebellious phase. "Oh your kid is picking fights? Must be a teenager!" Its just that during this phase we have lots of choices to make. Gently guiding us to the right path is different than tell us "No." It is denying us something that makes us more determined to get it. Let's take the case of alcohol. Most of the people of my age look at it as an exotic thing. My dad lets me drink. That doesn't make him a bad parent. His view is if we are denied something it becomes exotic and we aren't it loses its shine. For instance, now, I don't find drinking such a cool thing. Honestly, I think it tastes pretty bad. Our parents know us well too. When my dad talks about how he used to smoke as a teen he isn't worried that I wont smoke or do drugs because I'm aware of its harms.
Sometimes, parents tell us about the times they skipped classes to go for movies. They do so not to encourage us but to tell us in a way that it is normal, I guess. A reassurance that maybe a bit of mischief is required in life.
It is important to remember that every gift every slap they give us is for our own good. They've been through this as well and they try, even if they don't, to understand how we feel or what we're gong through. We teenagers appreciate being heard and not being clumped together under the label of "Teenager". All our problems are unique and treating them as a "Phase" is what hurts us the most.
Mischief is good in doses but in the end it is important to remember after we say "Mischief Managed" that we remember the responsibility that lies on our shoulder.
